Creative surprises in writing competition

Teachers were stirred and pleasantly surprised by the winning entries in the annual Creative Writing Competition. All winning entries were published by the English Department at the start of term.

Congratulations to Grace M, Otelia GD and Ananya G who each take first place for entries in Years 7, 8 and 9, respectively.

Aware of the students’ creative abilities within English lessons and their successes in writing competitions outside of school, the English Department set up this competition in 2018 as a way of recognising the imagination seen in students’ work completed in other subjects.

Every student in Years 7, 8 and 9 was set a writing task in each of three subjects: Classics, History and Religious Studies. Once the completed tasks were returned by their subject teachers, students selected which of their three they believed to be their best. This work was then submitted to their English teacher, who selected the best entry from each class. Finally, the English Department chose an overall winner for each year group.

The Head of English, Mr Barton, said the entries were a delight to read in the fifth year of the competition: "Students leave us delighted every year with their creative approaches to these topics.” He also said there were some surprises in store for this year’s competition.
