Library update: empowerment through reading
by Ms Nylinder, the Librarian It has been a busy Spring term in the Library, marked by the return of old favourites alongside an exciting new addition to our collection. Global reading Year 8 students embarked on their Reading Passport journey, travelling around the globe through books. Their aim has been to explore as many continents as possible, collecting stamps along the way. This annual reading and writing project continues to be rewarding in so many ways: students di

Poetry judge inspires Putney
Clare Pollard (esteemed poet, playwright and author) returned to Putney High School, having judged the annual Poetry Festival, to run a series of poetry workshops, very generously supported by parent fundraising via FOPHS. She worked with every year group, seeing nearly 500 students! Clare, whose poetry-writing career began when she was not much older than some of our students, winning her first award at just 19, explored the skill of creating a convincing voice in monologues

Honey and Harkness for Year 11
It is a truth universally acknowledged that starting any article connected to Jane Austen with 'it is a truth universally acknowledged' is an unpardonable cliché not to be countenanced. No self-respecting teacher would pollute the shades of Putney with such threadbare trash. So very unlike the quality of comment given by a group of intelligent Year 11s when they met after school to discuss Pride and Prejudice (pictured above). 'Was their discussion really so very fine?' Poetry Festival embodies school values
Anyone who has sat in the Performing Arts Centre, listening to our poets from Year 7 to Year 13 perform their poems, has felt the magic of the Putney High School Poetry Festival. From over 500 entries, the English Department selected 48 overall finalists who had the chance to deliver their poem before an external adjudicator – this year's judge was esteemed poet, writer and playwright, Clare Pollard. See her winners below! Why does the Poetry Festival capture the school's a

Young Reporters make the headlines
This term has been an exciting one for Putney's Young Reporters, who have been busy crafting stories as part of Newsquest's Young Reporter Scheme. Alessia K captured the lively atmosphere of Parsons Green Dog Fair in her article Pups on Parade , complete with interviews with a sponsor, a vendor and the proud owner of the winning dog. Alessia reflects on how, "through reporting this event, I learned how to observe small details that really bring a scene to life". The photogr

Acclaimed poet Kayo Chingonyi visits Putney
Putney welcomed celebrated poet Kayo Chingonyi, the Zambian British poet featured on the English Literature IGCSE specification, for an inspiring afternoon with Year 10-13 students. Joined by peers from West London Partnership schools, Putney students enjoyed a reading, lively Q&A and fresh insights into the poems they are studying. A memorable takeaway from the poem 'Some Bright Elegance' were the lines "dance, not to be seen but free, your feet/ are made for better things".
