New takes on Duffy and Shakespeare

The summer term concluded with some fun responses to studied texts for students in Years 7, 8 and 9.
Year 8 responded creatively to our reading of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice by scripting and acting out a 'missing scene'. Lively responses included those from 8FM (above left), where Portia (Zoë S) vented her frustration on Bassanio (Yaoyang D) for having given away the ring he swore to treasure forever, while Aimee J doubled as both Nerissa and some Belmont architecture. The plot then thickened further...
In 8SG (above right), Antonio confessed his true feelings for Bassanio, Bassanio and Portia attended marriage counselling (would she forgive him for the ring debacle?) and a young Shylock and Antonio discovered their mutual loathing for each other. Some inventive staging choices were made, including the creation of very convincing beards sported by Sophia P and Sophie J!
In Year 9, students were tasked with creating and performing poems inspired by our study of Carol Ann Duffy. All the work was completed with just pen and paper during lesson time.
Among some star turns in 9C, Ines MC, Penelope F and Eve H (pictured left) used props, costumes and some impressively dramatic readings to bring their work to life. Topics included the smells and sounds of weekly assembly, the pain of writing poetry and the loss of a loved one.
Year 7 students completed the task of directing a section of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. This involved designing costumes and scenery, explaining the rationale behind detailed stage directions and exploring deeper ideas, such as a feminist take on the script. The group comprising Keira H, Angel Y, Ena MN, Mariam A and Arabella G from 7SG created the wonderful costumes seen below, while Elena S created the scenery at the foot of this article.
