The summer term has been filled with reading initiatives, all reflecting one of Putney High School’s four 'I's: inclusive.

For the third year running, the Library hosted Putney High School’s Carnegie Shadowing Group. Throughout April and May, students from Year 6 and Year 8 read and judged the eight shortlisted titles nominated for the Carnegie Medal for Illustration.

The books were brought to life through a range of engaging activities, including reading aloud, presenting to the group and creating vibrant artwork inspired by the stories.

While assessing the books against a set of criteria is the group’s main task, an important aspect of the project is the opportunity for students from both the Junior and Senior Schools to work together. The Year 8 students excelled in their supervisory roles, providing guidance and making the visitors feel very welcome.

After weeks of scrutinising the eight books, and some last-minute changes of heart, Wolf and the Bear emerged as the favourite. The Shadowers praised it for its powerful illustrations that beautifully complemented the text, conveying themes of hope and the importance of friendship. The group was particularly struck by the symbolism woven throughout the images. This year’s Shadowing Group proved to be exceptionally thoughtful judges and collaborators, and it was clear they thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Year 10 students visited the Library to choose texts for their English reading and listening project, the Symposium. Much thought and effort went into the selection process, as they assessed titles from a list that included a wide range of fiction, drama and poetry. The Symposium project involves small groups reading their chosen text and then conducting a live discussion of the book in front of the rest of the class.

As part of Putney High School’s Diversity Week celebrations, the Library curated inspiring reading lists featuring characters and themes that celebrate the differences that make us special. Immersing yourself in a story is a brilliant way to gain insight into someone else’s life and reality, a true reflection of our society, all while enjoying a good book!

To mark the end of their first year, Year 7 students revisited a special tradition from their induction: the Blind Date with a Book. They carefully selected and wrapped a book for next year’s cohort, each with a handwritten letter and a brief description on the cover. This thoughtful gesture will form the first connection between new buddies in September, and may even inspire a new favourite read.

Students are welcome to borrow books from the Library over the summer. The public library is another excellent source of great books... and it’s free to join!

Team Library would like to wish everyone a wonderful, relaxing summer filled with reading!
