Club updates: English beyond lessons

FemBookSoc (photo above) continues to explore a wide variety of topics through a feminist lens. It has been very well attended this term and welcomed new members from Years 10-13. Student-led presentations have included a brief history of feminism; the law and women; sex work and criticisms of modern pornography; whether Rebecca is a feminist novel; women and Black History Month; the gender pay gap; the influence of the internet on feminism; how colonialism has impacted the way societies view women; feminism and religion; and women in comics.

New members are always welcome: Lunch 1 in SR7. Contact Miranda P and the Year 13 FemBookSoc team for more information or to be added to the FemBookSoc Team.

Futures / Hot Topics, aimed at sixth-formers, has had presentations on Classical, Renaissance and Modern Tragedy. We have also spent sessions considering what is literature and why study it, whether there is any point to the Arts and what is the relationship between literature and desire. We have read selections from John Carey, Andrew Bennett and Nicholas Royle and Kathryn Burlinson.

Come along to SR7 during Lunch 2 on Tuesdays.

Ink, the creative writing club, continues to meet weekly. Recently, students have been working on entries for the Young Writers' short-story competition on the topic of 'The Glitch'.

Join the fun on Mondays during Lunch 2 in SR2.
