Book buzz in the Library

by Ms Nylinder, the Librarian

The Library has been busy this term, hosting a range of exciting book-related activities.

The Year 7 Book Club members rose to the challenge during their first meeting as shadowing judges for the Yoto Carnegie writing award. Over the next couple of months, they will assess the literary quality of the seven shortlisted titles and vote for their favourite to win the Shadowers’ Choice Awards.

There is also a shadowing group for the Yoto Carnegie Medal for Illustration, a partnership between the Senior and Junior School. Year 6 students act as judges, and they are being supervised by a group of avid Year 8 readers. The enthusiasm from both year groups is infectious and it can be reported that the group are devouring the shortlisted books they have read so far.

The Library’s new iPad/digital-free zone has proved a popular space for students who want to immerse themselves in a good book, and it now has an official name! Congratulations and a big thank you to Kitty in Year 7, Audrey in Year 8 and Emma and Lilly, both in Year 9, who all suggested “The Book Nook”. It is a brilliant name which perfectly sums up the purpose and atmosphere of this wonderful space.

Kitty, Year 7 is one of the Book Nook winners and an avid reader. We asked her a few questions about the competition and reading:

How does it feel to win?

It feels great! It’s so exciting to be naming a part of the school that will hopefully be used for many years to come!

What was your inspiration behind the name?

I thought of the “Book Nook” because the area just looked like the perfect place to curl up and read a book (or two)!

What is your favourite thing about reading?

I really enjoy diving into a book and exploring a different world!

Is there an exceptionally good book you would like to recommend?

One of my favourite books is Death in the Spotlight by Robin Stevens. I love this book and I’m sure anyone who enjoys mystery books will too.

Good books are best shared. Each newsletter will feature a reader sharing their favourite book. Please let me, Ms Nylinder, know if you have a great read that you want to recommend.
